Warren Pohatu paintings

We have been learning how to use elements of good composition in our paintings of a New zealand animal in the style of the artist Warren Pohatu. Warren Pohatu was the artist model used for the mural on the end of Room 7. The paintings have definitely been a work in progress as each layer of paint needed to dry before commencing on the next step. The children learnt about underpainting, the effects of using opaque and transparent colours and how to mix colours. Blending the paint to make animals appear 3D was the aspect of the paintings that the students found the most difficult.

Learning Intention
We are learning to use features of an artist’s style

Success Criteria

• Will have used colour effectively
• Will have Maori patterns as shown in artist models in the painting
• Will show use of shading and tone to make animals appear 3D
• Will be a balanced composition with the animal the main focus

What fabric burns the fastest?

Today we did an experiment looking at how quickly different fabrics burn. The experiment is relevant to our lives in terms of the safest fabrics to wear in relation to fire resistance. Last week we had looked at fabrics and how easy or hard they are to tear or rip and explored some of the properties of various fabrics.
We discovered today that fabric that had polyster or nylon often took the longest to burn but melted slowly and gave off toxic smelling black smoke and this would not be an ideal fabric to be wearing in the event of a fire. Silk was very hard to ignite and melted around the edges and quickly went out. Cotton burnt quickly but didn't melt. Flannelette burnt extremely quickly and we discussed that this fabric is often what children's pyjamas are made of. Acetate often used in lining of jackets and dresses burnt quickly and melted. We timed how long each piece of fabric took to burn and these results will be analysed in conjunction with our observations.
We had made a hypothesis before doing the experiment stating that "the finer the fabric the quicker it will burn"
Tomorrow we will write up the procedure, observations, results, graphs and conclusion as practice for doing our own investigations for the science fair.

Keith Haring Artwork

Keith Haring
ARTIST

Keith Haring lived in Kutztown Pennsylvania. He was very inspired by graffiti art and chalk drawings. Keith had a specific way of drawing, his big bold movement lines and vivid colors stood out anywhere. He started out with chalk and went on to design with metal and plastic The Radiant baby became his symbol.
We used Keith’s style of art to make our own pictures then combined together to make one similiar to the colour picture above.

I am at the memorial gates at the Domain in Paraparaumu with my brother William.
This photo was taken on the 25th of April 2010, at the ANZAC dawn service. I am wearing my grandads medals and beret. Grandad was in the army in Borneo. Grandad wanted me to wear his medals because he couldnt attend the ANZAC service.

Army Training

We had a great day on Friday 23rd April doing Military exercises. Major O'Connor organised the events for the sessions and had the help of Corporal Duncan and Staff Sergeant. We started the session with physical exercises such as running, sit ups and push ups. We learned how to fall into line and briefly looked at marching in time. We then had three different activities. At the stretchers we had to bandage an arm and a leg and then work out a safe system of lifting and carrying the stretchers across the field with the patient. There was a lot of screaming going on from the patients! Another activity was sand bagging. We had to cooperate with a partner to half fill sacks of sand, drag them to a point and then build a wall with the bags. The shovels we used were small but very sharp. When the camoflague net was thrown over the sand bags it looked like part of the landscape from a distance. We also looked at a small tent used by individual soldiers, their rations, packs and some equipment. The third activity was erecting a tent that would be used by a medical team. Each group had a different part to do towards the construction of the tent. This also required a lot of team work. At the end of the day Major O'Connor took the whole syndicate for the lowering of the flag and raising of the flag and explained its significance. We all placed a poppy under the flag pole to remember all those who have fought and died in previous wars.

Anzac Day

It would be great if you could go to one of the ANZAC services on Sunday. Bright and early for the dawn service at 6.20am at the gates of the hospital, or at 9.20am at the same venue. See details on the notice that was sent home. Wear a poppy if you bought one.

Keeping ourselves safe

Today Constable Amanda talked to us about cyberbullying. Our class was shown a dvd about text and internet bullying. We learnt that if you let the problem get too big then it will be harder to fix, so it is a better option to tell a grown up you trust straight away so it doesn't escalate. We also learnt about some of the ways you can help and improve the problems and to help protect ourselves on the internet and on our phones. These are some of the ways we can stop the problem in its tracks.

(1)
Tell a trusted and respected adult as soon as the messages start coming amd show them what has been sent to you.

(2)
Don't delete any of the messages you receive so you can then show a trusted adult.

(3)
When signing up to websites like Facebook,Myspace, and Bebo put on a thing called block it ensures noone but your friends can talk to you and see your page.On sites like moshimonsters and others you can select block by hovering over their picture and selecting the block sign but don't just delete them as on moshimonsters you can add messages to your request which is another way of bullying, so block them and be done. A good site for parents to look at is www.netsafe.org.nz

Wacky Hair Quality Work

Wacky Hair Portraits

We drew pictures of ourselves with wacky hair. We needed to make sure we used our Habit of Mind of applying past knowledge to new experiences. We could do this as we had already done cartooning and Modigliani portraits so we were able to put facial features in the correct place, and we knew how to draw in the shoulders, neck and head. The hair was our new learning and this needed to be unique and could also feature patterns. Our portraits are very original!

Cartooning

Rooms 11,15,21 did some cartoon faces with Jane Lloyd. We got given two pieces of paper, a 6B pencil, plus a jumbo magazine to put the paper on. The first piece of paper had circles, but the other one was blank. Jane had a big sheet of paper so most people could see her drawing. We did nine different faces altogether on the circle piece of paper and another two on the blank one. They were all of different emotions. It was amazing to see how different styles you could have for facial features. My favourite was the cartoon of the exhausted guy
