Picasso Style Portraits

Term One 2011

Welcome to the new students in Room 11. Welcome back to the year sixes. There is a class newsletter with lots of information about what is happening at the start of this year on the right hand side of this blog under newsletters. Check out the homework for week two and the oral language presentation which is also on the right hand side of the blog. Start preparing for your oral language presentation - these will be presented in week 5 and 6 of this term. You will be given your date to present your talent/oral language on your homework sheet. Look through the blog. The spelling and math websites are useful and also look through the older posts
to see some of the sorts of activities you could be doing in Room 11. In the first week we will be doing Picasso portraits. These are lots of fun to draw.

Warren Pohatu paintings

We have been learning how to use elements of good composition in our paintings of a New zealand animal in the style of the artist Warren Pohatu. Warren Pohatu was the artist model used for the mural on the end of Room 7. The paintings have definitely been a work in progress as each layer of paint needed to dry before commencing on the next step. The children learnt about underpainting, the effects of using opaque and transparent colours and how to mix colours. Blending the paint to make animals appear 3D was the aspect of the paintings that the students found the most difficult.

Learning Intention
We are learning to use features of an artist’s style

Success Criteria

• Will have used colour effectively
• Will have Maori patterns as shown in artist models in the painting
• Will show use of shading and tone to make animals appear 3D
• Will be a balanced composition with the animal the main focus
